Join us as we examine the history of the atomic bomb and it's impact on global society.
Charles Adams will be presenting info about the 80th Anniversary of the Atomic Bomb. More info - 80 years ago on July 17th, 1945 an event occurred that forever changed the world. In the pre-dawn light of the New Mexico desert, science fiction became science fact as the men of the Manhattan Project set off the first ever atomic bomb. In this two hour presentation we will explore the history of this epoch event as well as the consequences of the new and arguably more dangerous world it created. Tracing back to Democritus, the Greek philosopher who once pondered at what point an apple could no longer be cut in half (labeling such a state as atamos or "uncuttable") we will follow a progression that will see the proof that atoms did indeed exist, but also that atoms also had parts. From this the theory of cutting the uncuttable atom lead to research and theories of the incredible power that doing that could release, and the destructive potential that could result if it was done unchecked. We will follow the researchers as they advanced their theories into working devices that were first tested on the fateful day on a site called Trinity and continue as we see the use of the weapon in time of war and the implications of it's use.
